Silhouette – Estonian Sinfonietta, Estonian Percussion Group

05.10.2025 16:00 - Arvo Pärt Centre

On October 5 at 16:00, the Estonian Percussion Group will perform together with the Estonian Sinfonietta at the Arvo Pärt Centre in the concert “Silhouette.”

The concert’s title is inspired by a work of Arvo Pärt, written by the composer as a tribute to Gustave Eiffel. A silhouette, or shadow image, is a figure formed by the boundaries between light and dark surfaces. The word itself comes from the name of France’s former finance minister, Étienne de Silhouette, and has an intriguing story—Étienne de Silhouette was considered a miser, and it was said that instead of furniture, his house contained only paper cutouts of outlines.

In addition to the story behind the concert’s title, the evening will feature some of Arvo Pärt’s most frequently performed works: “Tabula Rasa,” “Cantus,” “Spiegel im Spiegel,” and “Fratres,” the latter arranged by Vambola Krigul for a percussion quartet.

The world premiere of Riho Esko Maimets’ piece “Soliloquy” for piano, strings, and percussion quartet is also on the program. The composer introduces his new work as follows: “I wrote ‘Soliloquy’ as an intimate, honest, and genuine response to the world around me. As in many of my recent works, I strive to confront pain and sorrow.”

The same program will be performed on October 11 at the LisztFest 2025 in Budapest, at the legendary Pesti Vigadó Concert Hall, where, in the past, artists such as Johann Strauss, Ferenc Liszt, and Sergei Prokofiev also performed.

The concerts will be conducted by Erki Pehk, currently the conductor of the Kaunas State Music Theatre and the music director of the Panevėžys Music Theatre.

Both the Laulasmaa and Budapest concerts are sold out.
